The marshland south of Redhill is proper boggy, and that's exactly why it matters. Nutfield Marsh Nature Reserve spreads across wetland that's rare enough in Surrey to warrant serious protection - the kind of place where you'll spot things you won't see in a suburban park. Dragonflies, marsh birds, amphibians. If you're into wildlife, this is where you come.

It's free to visit and managed by Surrey Wildlife Trust, though opening times aren't always clearly posted online - best to check their website before heading out. You're looking at a couple of hours maximum for a proper walk, depending on the path conditions. The terrain is damp underfoot, so wellies aren't optional. Early morning or dusk gives you the best chance of seeing birds when they're active.

This works well as a break during a caravan holiday in the area. Betchworth Fort Park and Surrey Hills Park are both within striking distance - five or six miles - making it an easy half-day outing. It's not a destination that'll hold kids' attention for hours unless they're genuinely fascinated by wildlife, but serious birdwatchers and nature photographers will find it rewarding. The marsh changes with the seasons, so spring and early summer are particularly good when migrating birds pass through and breeding activity picks up.

What you won't find here are facilities - no café, no visitor centre. It's raw nature, which is rather the point. If you want a gentle stroll with guaranteed Instagram moments, look elsewhere. But if you want to understand what Surrey's wetlands actually look like, this reserve delivers.
