Nuns Way Recreation Ground

A modest strip of green on the eastern edge of Cambridge that punches above its weight if you know what you're after. Nuns Way Recreation Ground is essentially a nature reserve with proper wildlife potential - reed beds, open water, and the kind of quiet corners where you might actually spot something interesting without fighting crowds.

The ground itself is flat (this is Cambridgeshire, after all) and works best for birdwatchers and anyone keen on wetland ecology. Bring binoculars and patience. It's not a destination that'll occupy families with young kids for hours - there's no playground, no cafe, no visitor centre. But if you're camped at Fen End Farm or Hempsall Farm Vegan Glamping nearby, it's a cracking morning walk without having to drive anywhere. The reserve is free to access and takes as little or as long as you want - twenty minutes for a quick scout around, or two hours if you're serious about the birdlife.

Best visited in spring or autumn when migration brings rarer species through. Summer can feel a bit sparse unless you're specifically interested in breeding birds. Bring a notebook if you're twitching, or just enjoy the relative silence - a genuinely rare thing this close to Cambridge. It's the sort of place you'll either find utterly rewarding or slightly underwhelming depending on whether you came expecting chocolate box views or genuine wetland habitat. I fall into the former camp.
