The walk up Nova Scotia rewards you with one of the best views across the Cheviot Hills - genuine hill country that makes you feel properly away from it all. It's a modest peak by any standard, but from the top you get sweeping views south towards the Pennines and north into Scotland, which explains why walkers keep coming back.

This is a walker's hill, full stop. The ascent from Alnwick is straightforward enough - nothing technical, no scrambling - but you'll want decent boots because the ground gets boggy in places, especially after rain. Allow two to three hours for a round trip if you're starting from town. The views shift constantly depending on weather, and on a clear day the visibility is genuinely impressive.

It's free to access, naturally. Go early if possible - the car parking near the base fills up on weekends, and you'll dodge the crowds that gather from mid-morning onwards. Spring and autumn are your best bets weather-wise, though winter brings its own drama with low cloud and wind that'll test your resolve.

If you're based at River Breamish Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, Nova Scotia makes an obvious day walk. The campsite's only 1.4 miles away, which means you can push off without the faff of a longer drive. For families with young kids, be honest with yourself - it's not a playground, and bored children on a boggy hillside aren't fun for anyone. But for walkers seeking proper northern air and genuine solitude, it's worth the effort.
