Nottswood Hill

From the car park near Westbury-on-Severn, it's a steady climb through mixed woodland to reach this modest Gloucestershire summit. Don't expect dramatic Cotswold views - Nottswood Hill sits at a relatively gentle elevation, but the walk itself is lovely on a crisp morning.

Families with older children will manage the ascent without too much huffing, though toddlers might struggle with the steeper sections. The paths can get muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are essential. Once at the top, you'll find decent views across the Severn Vale, though nothing spectacular enough to warrant a special journey.

Walkers staying at nearby sites like Apple Orchard Camping or The Roost Retreats will find this makes for a decent morning's exercise before exploring the Forest of Dean proper. Allow two hours for the round trip, including time to catch your breath at the summit. The hill works well as part of a longer walking circuit, but as a standalone destination it's rather forgettable.

Best tackled early in the day before the car park fills up with dog walkers from the surrounding villages. It's free to access year-round, which is something at least.
