Nothe Gardens

There's a proper Victorian fort sitting at the end of a peninsula near Weymouth, and it's been turned into gardens that feel genuinely surprising when you round the corner. The Nothe Fort itself dates back to the 1860s - built to defend the harbour from French invasion that never came - but what makes it worth the journey from Rodwell is the way the gardens wrap around the structure, with views across Weymouth Bay that just don't quit.

The walk in takes you past ramparts and grassed slopes, and if you're the sort who actually cares about what plants are doing, there's proper horticultural stuff on display. But honestly, most people come for the views and the sense of wandering around a genuine fortification. It's not massive - you can see the whole thing in ninety minutes without rushing - which makes it decent either as a dedicated visit or a quick stop while staying at Waterside or Chesil Beach Holiday Park just down the coast.

Families with younger kids might find it bit exhausting after an hour; there's a fair amount of walking on uneven ground. History types will genuinely enjoy the fort's bones and the information dotted about. If you're based at one of the holiday parks nearby - and there are several solid ones within two miles - it's an easy addition to a seaside day without feeling like another tourist trap.

The setting really does the heavy lifting here. Time your visit for late afternoon when the light's proper golden and the crowds thin out.
