Northumberland Coast AONB

The Northumberland Coast is one of those stretches that makes you understand why people move north and never leave. It's a proper designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, running for miles along the North East coast, and it delivers exactly what it promises - wild, windswept shoreline without the crowds you'd get further south.

You're looking at dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and beaches that feel genuinely remote even when you're within spitting distance of Berwick-upon-Tweed. The walking is excellent. Park at one of the access points and you can spend anything from an hour pottering to a full day striding along the coastal path, spotting seals if you're lucky and photographing the light on the rock formations. Birdwatchers will have a field day - the cliffs hold nesting seabirds throughout spring and summer.

It's free to access, which is always welcome, and there's no particular entry fee or opening hours nonsense to worry about. Just turn up with decent boots and waterproof kit - the weather turns on a sixpence up here. Families with younger kids might find a single beach visit sufficient, but serious walkers could spend days exploring different sections.

The real bonus is staying nearby at Northumberland Coast Camp, just half a mile away. You can wake up practically on the boundary of the AONB, which means you're maximising time actually outdoors rather than driving. Perfect base for a week that's genuinely about the landscape rather than attractions.
