Northey Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Royston, Northey Wood is the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's Essex woodland at its most unassuming - mixed deciduous trees, well-trodden paths, and enough quiet to actually hear yourself think. The paths are decent enough for families with older kids, though after heavy rain the muddier sections will test your patience and your footwear.

This is walker territory more than anything else. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretive boards telling you what tree you're looking at. Just you, the wood, and whatever wildlife happens to be about. The appeal is straightforward: a green lung between the towns, perfect for blowing off steam midweek when the crowds aren't about.

If you're basing yourself at Pightle Farm Campsite nearby, Northey Wood is a solid half-day option on your itinerary. Stick an hour and a half aside to wander through without rushing. It works best when you're not expecting much - then the afternoon light through the trees feels like a proper bonus rather than a letdown.

Worth the detour from Royston? Only if you want woodland rambling without the postcard views. Kids under ten might find it dull; older ones and serious walkers will appreciate the simplicity of it.
