North Sutor Gun Emplacements

Steep cliffs overlook the Moray Firth at these World War II gun emplacements, where concrete bunkers and rusted metal fixtures still poke through the heather on the North Sutor peninsula. You're standing on a working bit of Scottish military history - anti-aircraft and coastal defence positions that were hastily dug in during the early 1940s when invasion felt genuinely possible.

The walk itself is the main draw. It's not arduous but demands respect: the clifftop path is narrow in places and the drop is proper vertical. Allow an hour to pick your way around, stop at each emplacement, and let your eyes adjust to what you're actually looking at - weathered concrete, forgotten gun mounts, the occasional graffitied reminder that others have been here too. On a clear day you get views across to the Black Isle and down the Firth. On a grey one, which is most days, the landscape turns brooding and isolated - honestly more atmospheric for it.

History buffs will get the most from this. Families with younger children might find it a bit underwhelming after twenty minutes unless they're genuinely into wartime archaeology. Walkers, though, should loop it into a proper ramble along the Sutors - the coastal path is excellent.

Close enough to Inverness that you could slot it into a day's exploring, and Delny Glamping sits just five miles away if you want a proper base nearby. Access appears unrestricted and free, though there's no visitor infrastructure - bring decent shoes.
