North Riding Forest Park

The forest stretches across North Yorkshire like someone's thrown a proper blanket of green over the landscape - all Scots pine, spruce and larch with walking trails threading through at every level. You can spend an afternoon here doing gentle loops or half-day hikes depending on mood and boot comfort, with the Pickering area just a few miles south as your base.

Walkers will find genuine value here. The trails are well-marked, terrain ranges from easy forest strolls to hillier routes with views back towards the moors, and there's actual peace - the kind where you hear birdsong rather than traffic. Families with younger kids should pick the shorter loops; the forest's fine but it's trees and tracks rather than attractions, so expect restlessness if you've got under-eights wanting something flashier.

The real bonus is proximity to the caravan parks. Vale of Pickering and Lakeside are both within easy reach, making this an excellent add-on to a holiday rather than a destination in itself. Use it for morning walks before heading into Pickering proper, or for an evening wander when the light gets interesting through the branches.

Free access and no time limits make it low-commitment, which works well - you can gauge the mood and either extend or leave early without feeling you've wasted entry fees. Spring's decent for bluebells if you time it right; autumn's obvious but crowded. Midweek visits in summer tend quieter than weekends.
