North Meadow, Cricklade

North Meadow is a proper riverside nature reserve just outside Cricklade, where the Thames meanders through water meadows thick with wildflowers come spring. You're not here for facilities or attractions in the traditional sense - you're here to walk, watch for birds, and see what a working flood meadow actually looks like. The path runs alongside the water, and depending on the season, you'll spot everything from lapwings to little egrets, though summer brings the meadow's real show: fritillaries and other wildflowers that have thrived here for centuries because of how the land is managed.

This is one for walkers and keen birdwatchers rather than families after a quick outing. An hour gives you a decent loop; two hours if you're serious about spotting things. Best visited spring or early summer when the wildflowers are at their peak. It's free to access, and the whole thing sits just a few miles from Cirencester, making it a natural addition to a park holiday in the area. Hoburne Cotswold Holiday Park is only 2.5 miles away, or Great Farm if you prefer a smaller site.

The walk itself is flat and straightforward, but expect muddy sections in winter. Bring binoculars if you've got them.
