Waterhay Lake

A decent stretch of water just outside Cirencester that draws walkers and fishermen in equal measure. Waterhay Lake sits quietly in the Gloucestershire countryside, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no theme park crowds, no gift shops hawking tat.

The lake itself is the main draw. You get pleasant water views, easy walking paths around the perimeter, and if you're into fishing, there's apparently decent coarse fishing available. It's the kind of spot where you can spend a couple of hours pottering about without needing a masterplan. Birdwatchers come here too - herons, ducks, the usual waterfowl suspects. In decent weather it's genuinely peaceful.

Families with younger children might find an hour here enough before restlessness sets in, unless the kids are properly into nature spotting. Serious walkers heading through the area won't think twice about including it as a leg of a longer ramble. It's flat enough that mobility isn't usually an issue.

If you're based at Hoburne Cotswold Holiday Park just up the road, it's worth a morning visit before heading into Cirencester proper or exploring the broader Cotswolds. The advantage of staying at one of the nearby parks is having access to a proper natural spot without the usual lake-side commercialism. No idea about admission fees - worth ringing ahead to check if there's a car park and whether fishing requires a day ticket.
