North Breache Wood

The woodland around North Breache, just south of Dorking, is proper Surrey - dense beech and oak with a floor of crispy leaf litter that tells you it's a working forest rather than a manicured park. You won't find a visitor centre or marked trails here; it's the sort of place you walk into and sort out your own route, which suits some people perfectly and will frustrate others looking for clear signage.

It's a short drive from Dorking town centre, making it handy if you're camped at Riverside Farm or one of the other sites clustered nearby. The walk itself is straightforward enough - no steep climbs, just the gentle ups and downs you'd expect in this part of Surrey. The trees are tall enough to offer real shelter, and in autumn the light filters through the canopy in that golden way that makes you understand why people bother getting out of bed before lunch.

Who gets the most from it? Walkers after a quiet hour or two away from the Dorking crowds, and families with kids old enough not to need constant entertainment. If your children expect waymarked routes and facilities, you'll find it a bit underwhelming. Allow an hour to ninety minutes to get a proper feel for it without rushing.

The forest works well as part of a longer Surrey walking circuit rather than a destination in itself. Pair it with a walk into Dorking proper, or combine it with other woodland nearby. It's free to access and there's no entrance fee - just park sensibly and respect that it's working woodland, not a public park.
