Normanston Park

You won't find crowds at Normanston Park, and that's rather the point. This nature reserve sits on the outskirts of Lowestoft, offering something genuinely different from the usual Suffolk coast experience - proper wetland habitat where you can actually spot wildlife without fighting through tourist hordes.

The reserve protects reed beds and open water that attract wading birds, particularly in spring and autumn migration periods. Bring binoculars and patience. You'll see lapwings, redshanks, and if you're lucky, marsh harriers quartering the reeds. The walking is straightforward - mostly level paths - though muddy in wet weather, so wellies aren't optional.

It's ideal for keen birdwatchers and anyone wanting a quieter half-day away from the beach crowds. Families with young children might find it a bit slow-going unless they're genuinely interested in birds; there's no visitor centre, cafe, or facilities to speak of. Allow two hours maximum, longer only if you're seriously into ornithology.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Pakefield, Azure Seas, or Broadland Sands are all within a couple of miles - it makes for a decent morning out before heading back for lunch. It won't replace a proper nature reserve visit elsewhere, but for a free, low-key escape from caravan park life, it does the job. Go early or late in the day when bird activity peaks and the light's better anyway.
