Oulton Broad

Wide waters stretch before you at this proper Norfolk Broads lake, just a short hop from Lowestoft's seafront. The broad itself covers about 150 acres and connects to the River Waveney, making it a cracking spot for boating enthusiasts and anyone wanting a gentler pace than the nearby coast.

Families will find plenty to keep everyone happy here. Kids can feed the ducks along the shoreline while parents soak up the peaceful atmosphere. The lake attracts serious anglers too - pike, perch and bream are all in good numbers if you fancy trying your luck.

Boat trips run regularly during summer months, offering a lovely way to explore the waterways without getting your feet wet. For the more adventurous, kayak and paddleboard hire is available from several operators around the lake's edge.

Walking the perimeter takes about an hour at a leisurely pace, with decent paths most of the way round. The southern shore offers the best views across to the reed beds where you might spot herons or marsh harriers.

It's free to wander the public areas and works well as a half-day trip from any of the nearby holiday parks like Pakefield or Azure Seas. The area gets busy on sunny weekends, so weekday mornings are your best bet for a bit of peace and quiet.
