Normangill Rig

The walk up Normangill Rig rewards you with proper views across the South Lanarkshire moorlands - nothing dramatic, but genuinely worth the leg work if you're based near Biggar. It's a modest peak by Scottish standards, the kind of hill that doesn't announce itself but grows on you once you're up there.

You'll find yourself on open moorland with wide sight lines. The approach is straightforward enough, though the going underfoot can be boggy in places. Walkers will appreciate the accessibility - it's not a slog that demands full mountaineering kit, just decent boots and reasonable fitness. The views sweep across rolling country towards the Southern Uplands, and on a clear day you can see proper distance.

If you're staying at Mount View Caravan Park just down the road, this makes a solid afternoon outing. Two to three hours all in, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the summit. Not the sort of peak that'll dominate your holiday, but it breaks up a park-based stay nicely. Families with older kids who don't mind moorland walking will manage fine; younger children might find the return journey tedious.

Go midweek if you can - weekends can bring a scattering of local walkers. Spring and early autumn offer the best conditions underfoot. Winter's possible but the exposed ridge can be properly windy, and boggy sections turn treacherous with frost. It's the sort of place that rewards a clear day - misty, it loses half its appeal.
