Norfolk Wildlife Trust – Cley and Salthouse Marshes visitor centre

The visitor centre sits right at the edge of one of Norfolk's most important wetland reserves, and honestly, it's the kind of place that gets under your skin. You're looking out over miles of reed beds and open water where the light changes every twenty minutes, and if you time it right, you'll see more birds than you knew existed. The centre itself is modest - informative displays about the marshes' ecology, binoculars for rent if you've forgotten yours, a decent little shop. But the real point is getting outside onto the hides and walking trails that thread through the reserve.

Birdwatchers will spend hours here contentedly; walkers after a straightforward ramble might find three miles enough before heading back to Holt for lunch. Families with young kids do okay on the shorter routes, though patience wears thin if there's no immediate avian drama. The winter months are cracking if you want serious birdwatching - migrating species, overwintering flocks. Summer's quieter but pleasanter for a stroll.

Admission is free, though donations are welcomed. Allow two to three hours if you're doing the main circuit and actually using the binoculars rather than just wandering. The ground can be boggy after rain - proper boots aren't optional. If you're based at Kelling Heath Holiday Park or Woodlands, this makes an easy morning or afternoon outing, and it pairs well with the quieter bits of the North Norfolk coast. Not spectacularly dramatic, but genuinely rewarding if you've got any interest in wildlife or just want an hour away from the caravan.
