Noman's Friend Wood

The woods around Berkhamsted hold some proper surprises if you know where to look. Noman's Friend Wood is one of those Buckinghamshire forests that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a quiet walk through beech and oak with the kind of peace you've travelled for. It's the sort of place where you actually hear birdsong instead of your own footsteps echoing back at you.

There aren't dramatic viewpoints or visitor facilities here - this is a straightforward woodland ramble. The paths are generally well-maintained, though they can get muddy after rain, so come prepared. You'll find yourself among mature trees and the occasional clearing where light breaks through the canopy. It's the antidote to manicured country estates, which makes it ideal for anyone who wants a proper walk rather than a destination tick-box.

Walkers will get the most from this one. Families with young kids might find an hour enough before boredom sets in, though older children who enjoy spotting wildlife tend to stick around longer. There's no cafe or facilities to speak of, so plan accordingly.

If you're based at Hill Farm Camping or Chiltern Yurts nearby - both genuinely excellent - this makes a solid morning or afternoon outing. You're close enough that it doesn't require a journey but far enough into proper woodland that you'll feel properly away from things. It's the kind of woodland you stumble upon when you're doing the Chilterns properly, not something you'd drive across the region for specifically. But if you're in the area already, don't overlook it.
