About Newtown Knott
This is a walker's spot, no question. Families with older kids will manage fine, though very small ones will find it tedious. There's nothing at the summit except a trig point and bracken, so don't expect facilities or a cafe. What you get is solitude and those sweeping vistas across to the higher peaks - Helvellyn way off, Scafell Pike if you squint hard enough.
Best visited in autumn when the bracken dies back and visibility tends to be clearest. Spring works too, muddier underfoot but fewer midges. Avoid in full summer if you can - the heather and grass get thick and buggy.
If you're based at Fisherground Campsite nearby, it's an easy half-day jaunt that doesn't require committing to an all-day expedition. Pair it with a walk along the Irton Road or a poke around Calder Bridge village. The effort-to-reward ratio is decent, and you'll likely have the fell mostly to yourself.
