Newton Wood

Ancient oaks tower overhead while dappled sunlight filters through the canopy at this proper Welsh woodland just outside Carmarthen. Newton Wood feels wild and untamed, the sort of place where kids can scramble over fallen logs and adults can actually hear themselves think for once.

Walking here is brilliant - the paths wind through dense mixed woodland that's clearly been growing for centuries. You'll spot everything from towering beech trees to sprawling rhododendrons, and the undergrowth is thick enough to make you feel properly cut off from the modern world. Families love it because there's space to roam without worrying about traffic or crowds.

The wood works well as a morning adventure if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks around Pendine Sands. Broadway Caravan Park and Parkdean Resorts are both within easy reach, making this a lovely contrast to beach days. After a few hours breathing in that earthy woodland air, you'll head back to your caravan feeling like you've had a proper dose of nature.

Bring decent walking boots - it can get muddy after rain. The paths aren't marked particularly well, but that's half the charm. Getting slightly lost among these ancient trees is rather the point.
