Lower Newton Wood sits just outside Carmarthen in the heart of Carmarthenshire, offering walkers a slice of ancient Welsh woodland without the crowds you'd find at more famous spots.

Families with older children who don't mind uneven paths will appreciate the peace and quiet, though pushchairs are definitely a no-go. Dog walkers seem to love it - we passed several during our wander, all making good use of the network of informal trails that wind through the trees.

The wood doesn't have formal opening hours or entrance fees, making it an easy addition to a South Wales holiday. It's properly wild rather than manicured, so don't expect waymarked routes or visitor facilities. Allow a good hour for a decent explore, though you could easily spend longer if you're into woodland photography or birdwatching.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like Pendine Sands or Laugharne Park puts this well within reach for a morning's ramble. It works particularly well as a quiet contrast to busier coastal activities - somewhere to cool off on hot days when the beaches are packed. Worth the short drive from Carmarthen if you fancy stretching your legs somewhere properly sylvan.
