Newton Down

Newton Down sits on the chalk downs just south of Winchester, offering one of the best walks in Hampshire if you're willing to put in the legwork. It's proper upland terrain - the sort of place where you can actually see across the county on a clear day, which isn't as common as you'd think in this part of England.

The walk itself climbs steadily through woodland before opening onto open downland with grazing land and views that stretch toward the Test Valley. On a decent afternoon, you get Winchester cathedral in the distance and rolling farmland in every direction. It's not dramatic in the way the South Downs further east can be, but there's something satisfying about the scale of it.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The terrain rewards a proper boot and a couple of hours free time - it's not a thirty-minute push-button visit. Families with younger kids might find it a bit steep for what amounts to a modest elevation gain, though older children who enjoy a real walk will be fine. History buffs won't find much in terms of monuments or ruins; it's the landscape itself that tells the story here.

Base yourself at Hookpit Farm Caravan Site or Stockbridge View, both within easy reach of Winchester, and you can string together a decent few days of downland walking. Newton Down pairs well with exploring the cathedral city itself. Free to access, naturally. Best visited outside summer weekends when the car parks fill up.
