Walking into Newton Copse feels like stepping back in time - the ancient woodland near Yeovil holds its own against the more famous New Forest without the crowds. Towering beeches and oaks create a cathedral-like canopy overhead, and in spring the forest floor erupts with bluebells that genuinely take your breath away.

This is proper territory for serious walkers. The trails wind through genuine native woodland, not the managed park experience you get elsewhere. There are proper muddy stretches, tree roots to navigate, and actual quietness - the kind where you can hear birds properly. Give yourself at least two hours to explore without feeling rushed; three is better if you want to linger.

It's worth checking conditions before you go because after heavy rain the paths become genuine bog. Summer brings the flies, so time it for late spring or early autumn and you'll have the place almost to yourself. Families with older kids who can handle uneven terrain will get the most from it; younger children might find the lack of facilities a bit limiting.

Unlike the honeypot attractions around here, you can spend hours without seeing another person. The downside? No café, no facilities, no signage worth a damn. Bring a decent map and waterproof boots.
