New Invention Hill

The view from New Invention Hill catches you off guard. You're standing on what feels like proper high ground for Shropshire - nothing dramatic, but enough to make the walk worthwhile. It's the kind of spot where the landscape falls away in all directions, giving you a real sense of where you actually are in the county. The hill itself is accessed easily enough from Knighton, and the walk up takes maybe thirty minutes without pushing it.

This is walker territory, full stop. If you're staying at one of the glamping sites nearby - Black Hall Lodges or Wild Valley are both within a few miles - it's an excellent half-day outing. There's nothing fancy here, no visitor centre or tea shop, which is rather the point. You get a working landscape view: fields, scattered woodland, the bones of rural Shropshire laid out properly. Kids will manage it without complaint if they're already on a walking kick; much younger ones might find it a bit of a slog for what's essentially a viewpoint.

Come on a clear day, ideally midweek when it's quiet. The weather matters more than most summits because the appeal is entirely about the view and the quiet. Winter walks are cracking if you've got the layers right. Allow a couple of hours including the walk itself and a bit of sitting about to actually take it in. It's free, obviously - there's no infrastructure to pay for. Good for stretching the legs between other Shropshire activities, but don't come expecting facilities or signage.
