Llanfair Hill

The walk up Llanfair Hill rewards you with proper views across the border country towards Wales. It's not a huge peak - you're looking at around 1,400 feet - but the ascent from Knighton is steep enough that you'll feel like you've earned the view when you reach the top.

What you get is a classic walk through Shropshire moorland, with the path taking you through bracken and heather depending on the season. On a clear day the vista stretches far enough to make the huffing worthwhile. The real appeal here is the isolation - this isn't a busy honeypot. You'll spend most of the climb seeing sheep and sky rather than other walkers.

Give yourself a solid hour and a half each way from Knighton. It's free, naturally, and the path is well-defined enough that you don't need any special equipment, though proper boots are worth the bother if the ground's damp. Spring and early summer are best - the hill can feel a bit grey and unwelcoming in winter.

If you're based at one of the glamping spots nearby - Offa's Pitch or Wild Valley are within walking distance - this fits neatly into a morning outing before lunch. It's the sort of walk that works for families with older children who don't mind a proper climb, and solo walkers after some genuine peace and quiet. You won't be entertained by facilities or interpretation boards, so come for the walk itself, not the destination.
