New Farm Coppice

Walking into New Farm Coppice feels like stepping back about three hundred years. This is proper woodland - not a manicured nature reserve, but the sort of place where you half expect to stumble upon charcoal burners' mounds or an old woodman's hut. The trees are dense enough that even in summer you get real shade, and the floor is thick with leaf litter that muffles your footsteps.

It's ancient coppice woodland, meaning these trees have been cut and regrown for centuries. You'll spot the characteristic multi-stemmed growth on many of the older specimens - hazel, oak, and ash mostly. If you're into woodland history or botanical detail, you could spend hours picking apart the layers. For casual walkers, it's a straightforward, quiet place to ramble without much challenge underfoot. You won't find marked trails or interpretation boards, so it's not the sort of spot where younger kids get handed a treasure hunt. That said, there's something genuinely restful about it - no crowds, no car park bustle.

Being just outside Shrewsbury, it works well as a morning walk before heading into town proper, or as a breather if you're staying at Springfield Riverside Camping or Shropshire Glamping. Allow an hour to two hours depending on how methodical you are. There's no admission charge and no facilities to speak of, so bring what you need. Winter is lovely when the canopy opens up; spring when the bluebells come through is worth timing around.
