New Earnstrey Park

The woodland stretches on either side of the path as you push deeper into New Earnstrey Park, and it becomes clear why locals keep quiet about this place. It's a proper nature reserve - the kind where you're more likely to spot a nuthatch than another person on a Tuesday afternoon.

This is grassland and woodland habitat just outside Bridgnorth, managed for wildlife rather than visitor numbers. You'll find yourself on gentle trails through mixed woodland, with clearings that open onto rough grassland. Birdwatchers do well here - nuthatches, spotted woodpeckers, buzzards if you're lucky. In spring the bluebells make a decent showing. It's the sort of place where a two-hour walk feels unhurried and genuinely quiet.

Walkers get the most from it, particularly those who don't need facilities or cafes. Families with older kids will enjoy it too, though there's nothing to stop for - no visitor centre, no picnic area that I could find. In summer, take a hat; the open sections don't offer much shade. Winter's actually rather good when the trees are bare and you can see deeper into the woodland.

The reserve sits well within a Shropshire touring holiday. Wheathill Touring Park is barely four miles away, and from there you can move between New Earnstrey, the Stretton Hills walks, and Bridgnorth's high street without much effort. It won't take a full day - three hours maximum for a proper explore - but it's absolutely worth the detour if you're in the area and want something authentic rather than managed.
