New Brockley

New Brockley is a proper working forest rather than a manicured visitor attraction, which means you get the real thing - proper woodland with paths threading through mature trees and the kind of quiet you don't find near Ipswich town centre. It's the sort of place where you're genuinely walking through forest rather than following a themed trail, which appeals to people who actually like forests instead of the idea of them.

Walkers will find this rewarding. The paths are well-maintained enough to manage in decent boots, and you can easily spend two to three hours here without feeling rushed. Families with older kids will get on with it fine; younger ones might lose interest if they're expecting play equipment. There's no visitor centre or café, so bring what you need.

The real appeal here is that it feels like proper Essex woodland - not a nature reserve with information boards, just trees. That's either brilliant or a bit dull depending on what you're after. If you're staying at Suffolk Steel House & Glamping just down the road, this makes an excellent morning walk without needing to drive anywhere. The Lost Garden Retreat is also close enough that combining the two would make for a solid day.

Timing-wise, spring and autumn are nicest - less muddy than winter, less buggy than summer. It's free to access and there's no formal opening hours situation, though obviously you'd want daylight. Go if you want a genuine forest walk. Skip it if you need facilities or structured entertainment.
