Netherheyford Mount

The walk up Netherheyford Mount takes about twenty minutes from the village, and honestly, that's the whole appeal. It's not a mountain - let's be clear about that - more a modest hill that rises above the Northamptonshire landscape near Northampton, but from the top you get proper views across the countryside that make the climb worthwhile. On a clear day you can see quite far, which feels like real achievement for something so close to town.

Historically, this was a significant spot. Iron Age folk built a hillfort here, and you can still make out the earthworks if you know what to look for - ancient ditches and ramparts that give the place genuine weight. It's the sort of thing that appeals to history types and keen walkers rather than families expecting a visitor centre and café, so manage expectations accordingly.

The climb itself is a steady gradient rather than anything punishing, which means families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might flag. Allow an hour there and back if you're not rushing, bit longer if you want to potter about looking at the views and thinking about Iron Age settlement patterns.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Blisworth Park or Hideaway Wood Farm are closest - this works as a decent morning walk that doesn't eat your whole day. Pair it with exploring Northampton town centre or the Grand Union Canal nearby and you've got a solid few hours. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's proper Northamptonshire, and sometimes that's exactly what you need.
