Harpole Playing Field

A few miles outside Northampton, Harpole Playing Field is a proper local nature reserve that won't set your pulse racing but offers a genuine bit of green space if you're camping in the area. It's grassland and scrub habitat - the sort of place where you'll spot common birds and, if you're lucky, butterflies in summer. Not massive, so don't expect hours of rambling here.

Who gets the most from it? Keen birdwatchers and families after a quick leg-stretch between pitches will find it worthwhile. If you've got young kids desperate to burn energy, there are worse places to spend thirty minutes. The real appeal is proximity rather than spectacle - it's accessible from any of the caravan sites within five miles, including Blisworth Park and Hideaway Wood Farm, both decent bases for exploring the wider area.

There's no clear information on facilities or formal opening hours, so turn up during daylight and expect a working reserve rather than a polished attraction. Free access, as far as we can tell. The flat terrain means it's not challenging - good for anyone who finds serious walking dull. If you're after something with more visual punch, Northampton itself has better offerings, but as a gentle addition to a park holiday, this works fine. Bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing.
