Netherfield Lagoons

The lagoons at Netherfield are a former gravel extraction site that's been left to do what nature does best - turn industrial scars into something worth visiting. You get a string of flooded pits filled with clear water, fringed by vegetation that's attracted proper numbers of birds and wildlife. It's the kind of place where you can actually spot something interesting without needing binoculars, though you'll want them if you're serious about birdwatching.

Walkers and nature enthusiasts will find it absorbing. The paths are straightforward enough, and you can spend a good hour or two picking your way around the water's edge, depending on how much time you want to spend watching for kingfishers or simply sitting on a bench. In spring and autumn the migrant species show up, which is when local birdwatchers get properly excited. Families with older kids will manage fine, though very small ones might find the lack of facilities a bit limiting.

It's free to access, which is the main appeal - no nonsense, no gates, just turn up. The nearest town is Nottingham, only a few miles south, so it works well as a half-day outing if you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby like Shelford Nurseries or Gunthorpe Camping. Best visited early morning or late afternoon when the light's decent and the birds are active. Winter's quieter but can be moody and atmospheric. Don't expect manicured gardens or interpretation boards - this is proper nature doing its thing.
