Cotgrave Country Park

The lake at Cotgrave is the real draw here - a proper expanse of water that transforms what was once industrial land into something genuinely worth the drive from Nottingham. You get woodland walks threading through, open grassland where you can actually spread out without tripping over other visitors, and enough water margins to keep bird-watchers occupied for a good couple of hours.

It's the kind of place that works best for families wanting a low-key afternoon rather than something packed with attractions. Kids can run about on the grass, walkers get decent paths without steep climbs, and anyone with binoculars will clock waterfowl and the occasional heron if they're patient. The conversion from its former life means it feels less manicured than some country parks - there's a genuine wildness to it that's rather refreshing.

You're close enough to Holme Pierrepont Campsite and the other camping options scattered around the 3-5 mile mark that you could easily base yourself at one for a week and dip in here between other Nottinghamshire explorations. It won't take all day, though - three hours is probably the sweet spot unless you're genuinely committed to bird identification. Free access and no faffing about with gates make it a handy half-day stop when the weather's decent. Rain, though, and the appeal dims fairly quickly.
