Neolithic Flint Mines

Five thousand years ago, someone decided to dig into the Sussex chalk downs and extract flint. It's not dramatic in the way a castle is. The mines themselves aren't fenced off or developed into a visitor attraction with interpretation boards. You'll need to know what you're looking for, or bring someone who does. Local history groups sometimes run walks here, which is worth checking before you visit. It's free to access, though there's no formal car park or facilities. The nearest proper town is Pulborough, about 3 to 4 miles away. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks scattered around the area - Washington, Fox Wood, or The Barn are all within reasonable distance - this could be a morning's exploring before lunch rather than a day-trip destination. Best visited on a clear day when you can properly see the landscape. Combine it with walks along the Arun Valley for a proper half-day out.
