About Nelsons Monument

Standing tall on Birchen Edge, this weathered stone monument catches you by surprise. Built in 1810 to commemorate Admiral Nelson's naval victories, it's a proper landmark that's visible for miles across the Peak District moors. The 20-foot tower sits atop one of Derbyshire's most dramatic gritstone edges, just east of Bakewell.

Walkers will love the approach - it's a decent climb through heather and bracken, but well worth the effort for the views alone. From the base, you can see across the Derwent Valley towards Chatsworth House, with the moors rolling away in every direction. The monument itself is fairly simple - just the tower and a small plaque - but it's the setting that makes it special.

Families with older children who don't mind a bit of scrambling will find it rewarding, though the rocky terrain isn't suitable for pushchairs. History enthusiasts might feel slightly underwhelmed by the monument itself, but the location more than compensates. It's free to visit and makes an excellent short walk from any of the nearby campsites. Chatsworth Park Caravan Club is closest at under two miles, making this a perfect morning expedition before heading into Bakewell for lunch. Allow an hour for the round trip if you're starting from the main road.
