Neatham Down

The walk up Neatham Down rewards you with proper views across the Hampshire countryside - the sort of vista that makes you understand why people settle in this corner of the world. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch, but that's rather the point. The climb from Alton is gentle enough that it doesn't punish you, yet steep enough to feel like you've earned the summit.

You'll find beech trees fringing the higher slopes and open grassland across the top. On a clear day the views stretch towards the South Downs. It's the kind of place where walkers and families with decent stamina will get genuine pleasure - your legs won't suffer, but you'll feel the achievement. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip from town, longer if you plan to linger and soak it in.

This sits perfectly within a park holiday in the area. Feather Down Manor Farm and Wigwam Holidays are both within striking distance, so you can base yourself at either and tackle the walk as part of a morning or afternoon outing. The down is manageable enough that it won't exhaust you before exploring Alton's town centre or planning other local walks. Go early if you want the place to yourself - midweek mornings in autumn and spring are lovely. Avoid the bog season unless you've got proper boots.
