National Trust - Witley and Milford Commons

The commons sprawl across 800 acres of proper Surrey countryside just outside Godalming - open heathland, scattered pine woodland, and bog that feels genuinely wild despite being only an hour from London. You're walking across land that's been common ground for centuries, which does something to you when you realise it.

There's no entrance fee and no set route, which is both liberating and slightly overwhelming. Most people stick to the main paths that weave through the heather and birch trees. In late summer the heather blooms purple and it's worth timing a visit then - the whole landscape shifts colour. Winter's bleak but atmospheric. Spring brings bluebells in the damper patches.

Historically types will appreciate that this was working commons where locals had grazing rights - that relationship between land and people is still written into the landscape. Walkers will find genuine miles here without needing to be a serious hiker. Families with young children might find the open ground a bit exposed and featureless after the first half hour, though the bog areas have their own weird appeal.

Allow two to three hours minimum if you're doing more than a quick circuit. The ground can be boggy underfoot even days after rain, so proper shoes matter.
