National Trust - White Mill

The White Mill sits right on the edge of Wimborne, a proper working watermill that actually does what it was built for - grind grain using the River Allen. You can watch the massive wheel turn and see flour being made in the traditional way, which is far more interesting than it sounds. The National Trust maintains it beautifully, and the riverside setting is genuinely lovely.

It's not a massive attraction - you'll spend maybe 45 minutes here unless you're really into milling machinery. Families with young kids tend to enjoy it more than you'd expect because there's something hypnotic about watching that wheel work, and the riverside location means you can have a wander about afterwards without feeling shortchanged. History buffs will appreciate seeing how flour production actually worked before industrialisation.

The grounds are free to explore if the mill itself is closed, though admission details are a bit vague online, so ring ahead. Spring and summer are best - you'll see the river at its most lively and the banks are pleasant for a post-visit stroll.

It's excellent paired with a holiday at Dorset Glamping just down the road, which is only 3.6 miles away. You could easily spend a morning here and still have the afternoon free for something else. If you're basing yourself at Parkdean's Sandford Holiday Park, it's about 20 minutes' drive, manageable as a half-day outing. The river itself is the real attraction - the mill is the excuse to visit.
