Knighton Heath Golf Course sits just outside Wimborne, a proper championship-standard layout that takes full advantage of the Dorset heathland. The course winds through gorse and heather - it's visually striking rather than brutally difficult, which makes it accessible without being dull. Eighteen holes, par 71, and the routing is thoughtful enough that you're never bored, even if your handicap keeps climbing.

Golfers will get the most from this one. Serious players will appreciate the design; beginners won't feel completely out of their depth. If you're not a golfer, there's not much to do here - don't expect a café or visitor attractions. The heathland setting is lovely, but you're paying greens fees to experience it, not walking round for free.

Access-wise, you'll need to contact the club directly for current rates and booking requirements - it's not the sort of place with a slick website. Allow a full four hours minimum if you're playing 18. The surrounding area is strong for a park holiday: Dorset Glamping is just 4.5 miles away, and the bigger holiday parks like Haven Rockley Park and Oakdene Forest Park are all under five miles, making this easy to slot into a broader Wimborne break. Come midweek if you can - weekends book up with members. The course is at its best in spring and early autumn when the heather flowers. Winter can be wet and slow.
