The white chalk cross carved into Watlington Hill's flank is visible for miles across the Oxfordshire plains - a proper landmark that's been guiding travellers since 1871. It's the sort of thing that makes you wonder who bothered to haul themselves up there with pickaxe and determination just to leave a message. The hill itself, owned by the National Trust, rises sharply from the village of Watlington and offers the kind of walk that feels purposeful without being punishing.

The climb takes about twenty minutes from the bottom, and you're rewarded with genuine views across the Vale of Oxford once you reach the top. On a clear day it's worth the leg work. The surrounding woodland is pleasant enough for families who don't mind a bit of elevation gain, though younger children might find the push tedious. If you're based at White Mark Glamping or The Chilterns View, this is a decent half-day outing that fills a couple of hours without swallowing your whole afternoon.

It's free to visit and there's no formal opening times - the hill's always accessible. Go early if you want solitude, though the track can get muddy after rain and it's not the sort of place that's worth battling crowds for. The cross itself, when you finally stand beneath it, is oddly understated. What makes it worthwhile is the walk itself and the fact that Watlington village has proper pubs and a reasonable high street for lunch afterwards. Pair it with a walk around Shirburn Estate or a visit to nearby Pyrton if you're making a day of it.
