The New Battery, built later as firepower got heavier, is more spacious and tells you what changed in military thinking over a few decades.

It's not a day-long visit - most people spend ninety minutes here, an hour if you're rushing. Best for history buffs and anyone interested in military archaeology. Kids might find the tunnels exciting for ten minutes, then get restless. The walk itself is stunning though, so factor that into your time.

Entry is National Trust members free, others pay a small fee. Early morning or late afternoon beats midday when coach parties arrive. If you're staying at Tapnell Farm or any of the parks near Totland Bay, this slots nicely into a coastal ramble.
