National Trust - Stockbridge Down

The chalk downland here rolls on for miles, and you can feel why the Saxons chose this route - there's a sense of being lifted above the everyday world. Stockbridge Down sits on the Test Valley Way, so most visitors arrive on foot rather than by car, which keeps the place refreshingly quiet even on decent weekends.

It's proper walking country. The open grassland gives you sightlines for miles, and on a clear day you're looking across Hampshire's green folds towards the South Downs. There's no visitor centre or facilities, which some find frustrating and others find brilliant. You get what National Trust used to be about - land managed for wildlife and walkers, not Instagram moments.

Walkers and serious countryside types will get the most from this. It's not dramatic in the way chalk downs can be elsewhere, but that gentleness is the point. Bring decent boots - the chalk gets slippery after rain. Allow two to three hours for a proper circular walk; shorter strolls are possible too. The paths are well-marked but it's easy to lose your way if you're not paying attention to the map.

If you're based at Stockbridge View or The Meadow Glamping - both within easy reach - this works as a half-day break from the car. It connects brilliantly with walking the Test Valley Way itself, or combining it with Longstock Water Gardens nearby. Admission is free and there's no specific opening times; it's just there, waiting. Go on a quieter weekday if you can.
