Cleeve Hill

The walk up Cleeve Hill rewards you with proper views across the Test Valley, especially on a clear day when you can see well beyond Stockbridge. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a steady climb through chalk downland - but that's rather the point. There's something satisfying about a hill that doesn't announce itself too loudly.

You'll pass through open grassland with the sort of uncluttered horizons that make you remember why you left the car behind. The summit itself is modest enough, but families with decent walkers will find it manageable, and the space at the top means kids can run about without much risk. Allow an hour or so from the base, depending on your pace and how often you stop for photographs.

This works well as a half-day outing if you're staying at Stockbridge View or The Meadow Glamping - both are close enough that you won't waste the morning driving. The hill is free to access, which is always a bonus. Come in late afternoon when the light softens and the crowds thin out. Winter's actually rather good up here too, provided the ground isn't waterlogged.

Historically-minded types might enjoy the chalk landscape itself - evidence of ancient settlement and agriculture covers these downs - but don't expect interpretation boards or marked trails. This is straightforward walking country. It's not the sort of peak that dominates your itinerary, but it's a solid addition to a Test Valley holiday if you want a gentle leg-stretch with a view.
