National Trust - South Milton Sands

The beach at South Milton Sands stretches wide and golden, backed by National Trust land that feels genuinely wild - no fairground nonsense, no promenade clutter. It's a proper Devon cove, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The sand is firm enough for walking but soft enough to settle into with a book, and the cliffs rise dramatically behind, creating natural shelter from the wind that hammers most of the coast.

What you're really getting here is space and quietness. Families with young kids will find safe shallow water in summer, though the undertow deserves respect come autumn. Walkers gravitate here for the coastal path access - the routes heading east towards Hallsands or west are genuinely spectacular, with views that don't feel like they're trying too hard to impress. The kind of walks where you forget you're on holiday for a bit.

Historyspotters might linger on the fact that Hallsands village, visible from here, largely fell into the sea by the 1920s after dredging stripped the protective shingle. There's something sobering about standing on this beach and seeing what the sea can take away.

Timing-wise, come outside August if you can - the car park fills quickly, and the whole place feels less like Devon and more like a day trip from Surrey. Spring and autumn are cracking. The South Devon Camping Lower Terawhiti Farm sits just 0.7 miles back, making this a genuine five-minute walk from your pitch, while Karrageen Caravan Park is barely further. For a National Trust property with proper teeth to it, this beats many of the more famous spots.
