Charles Wade, who owned the place for decades, was a collector of the obsessive, hoarding sort. The rooms are crammed with everything from Japanese armour to vintage toys to musical instruments. It's less a stately home and more a cabinet of curiosities that happens to be National Trust property.

The garden is the real draw for most visitors. It's not showy or manicured; instead it rambles in a very English way down the slope, with terraces, stone work, and hidden corners that reward poking about. Summer is best - the place can feel a bit melancholy in winter. Allow two to three hours if you're actually looking at things rather than just walking through.

Historians and collectors will absolutely love it. Families with young kids might find the house rules about not touching anything a bit grim, though the garden keeps them occupied. It's a National Trust property, so it's not free, though members pay nothing. Broadway is only 2.5 miles away via the caravan club campsite, making it straightforward for anyone based at the local holiday parks. Worth the detour if you're doing a Cotswolds sweep, but don't expect the manicured grandeur of other NT properties.
