National Trust - Saddlescombe Farm and Newtimber Hill

The windmill at Saddlescombe is the real draw here - a proper working mill that sits squat and stubborn on the Sussex Downs like something from a Constable painting. National Trust runs the place, and you can walk right up to it on a gentle track from the farm, which takes maybe twenty minutes from the car park. The views across the Weald are genuinely worth the leg work, especially on a clear day when you can see all the way to the South Downs ridge.

What makes this worth the trip is that it's not crowded. You'll find families wandering about, walkers refueling before tackling Newtimber Hill itself, and the occasional history buff poking around the millhouse. The hill behind the farm offers proper views and a decent walk if you want to stretch further - takes about an hour from the mill depending on your pace. In summer it's lovely; in winter a bit muddy and exposed, so come prepared.

Newtimber Hill itself is steep enough to get the legs working but nothing punishing. There's a small car park at the farm, and admission is free - it's National Trust open access land. Allow two to three hours if you're doing the full circuit with a breather at the top. Henfield sits just a couple of miles away if you need supplies or lunch afterwards. The nearby parks like Downsview and Blackberry Wood make this a natural add-on to a South Downs break, especially if you want something with actual history rather than just countryside.
