National Trust - Oldbury Hill

Iron Age hill fort meets woodland ramble on the slopes above Sevenoaks. Oldbury Hill is what happens when history decides to hide in plain sight - ancient earthworks, mysterious ditches, and the kind of views that make you understand why someone built a settlement here 2,500 years ago.

The site itself is essentially a walk through managed woodland where you can trace the remains of defensive banks and ditches. There's nothing reconstructed or fancy about it, which is rather the point. You're picking your way through actual archaeology, not a museum interpretation. The ramparts are subtle enough to miss if you're not paying attention, which makes spotting them oddly satisfying.

Walkers get the most from this one. You're looking at anything from a gentle amble to a proper circuit depending on your energy levels and how much you want to poke around the banks. It's free to access, which is standard for National Trust outdoor spaces, though it does mean no facilities - bring water. Spring and autumn are best, before the woodland gets too dense and sticky.

There's a reason this works with a Kent holiday based at Thriftwood Country Park or Gatehouse Wood Country Park nearby. You can combine it with proper walking in the wider Greensand Way, or use it as a half-hour stop between bigger attractions. Solo historians will spend longer investigating the earthworks. Families with young children might find it a bit too "there isn't actually much to look at" - it rewards curiosity more than spectacle.
