National Trust - Nymans

The ruins of a grand Edwardian mansion sit among 30 acres of woodland and formal gardens, their Gothic arches framing views across the Sussex Weald. What remains of Nymans is haunting rather than depressing - the skeleton of a once-lavish country house, gutted by fire in 1947 but left standing as a monument to a vanished world. You wander through roofless rooms, climbing stone stairs that lead nowhere, reading the ghosts of plasterwork on exposed walls.

The real draw, though, is the garden. Wisteria drapes over the stone balustrades, rhododendrons light up the woodland in spring, and a formal topiary garden sits to one side like a frozen chess game. There are yew hedges, herbaceous borders, and quiet corners where you genuinely lose the crowds. Allow two to three hours if you're pottering about; an hour and a half if you're just doing a quick circuit.

History types will eat this up - the bones of the house tell a story without needing much interpretation. Families with young children might find it engrossing for a spell, though there's limited interactive stuff, so boredom can set in. Walkers and garden enthusiasts are where Nymans really sings.

It's a National Trust property, so membership gets you in free; non-members pay. The nearest town is Haywards Heath, ten minutes away, and you're well-positioned for hitting Sunset Tree Camping or Worth Forest Glamping if you're basing yourself locally. Spring or early autumn are your sweet spot - summer gets busy, winter's bare.
