There's a proper small-town museum tucked away in Cuckfield, just outside Haywards Heath, that tells the story of this corner of Sussex with genuine care. The collection moves through local history - Roman finds, medieval bits, and plenty of material about the village's own past. It's the kind of place where you get a real sense of how people actually lived here across the centuries, rather than a glossy heritage experience.

You'll find it works best if you're genuinely interested in local history rather than after a quick photo stop. An hour is realistic, maybe ninety minutes if you read everything properly. The staff know their stuff and will chat if you ask questions - that's when a small museum becomes worthwhile.

If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Sunset Tree is closest at under three miles - this makes a solid rainy-day option or a quieter morning activity before heading to larger attractions. Haywards Heath itself has better restaurants and shops if you need them, but Cuckfield's got character the bigger town lacks. Worth combining with a walk around the village itself, which has a lovely church and proper country feel. Not a showstopper on its own, but genuinely worthwhile if you're spending a few days in the area.
