National Trust - Northey Island

Low tide is when Northey Island properly reveals itself - a thin causeway emerges from the mud flats connecting the Essex mainland to this National Trust-owned salt marsh island. It's elemental stuff: wading birds, spartina grass, and the overwhelming sense that you're standing in a landscape that hasn't changed much since the Vikings sailed up the Blackwater in 991.

The island itself is small enough that you won't lose hours here, but it's absolutely worth an hour or so if you're exploring Maldon's waterfront. There's genuine history - the Battle of Maldon was fought nearby in that year, and you can feel the tidal drama of it all. Walkers and birdwatchers get the most from this spot; children lose interest quickly unless they're genuinely into waders and mudflats.

Access depends entirely on the tides - check before you head out, as the causeway floods at high water and becomes impassable. The nearest holiday parks at Osea Leisure and Mill Beach are handy if you're basing yourself here, both just under a mile away. Steeple Bay further along the coast works too if you prefer a bigger resort feel.

Free to visit, no facilities on the island itself. Go at dawn if you can - the light hits the water properly, and you'll have the place to yourself. It's an odd, moody place rather than a crowd-pleaser, but if you appreciate tidal marshes and quiet history, it's worth the muddy boots.
