National Trust - Horsey Windpump

A proper Norfolk icon stands about a mile inland from the coast near Great Yarmouth - this seven-storey windpump has been pumping water from the marshes since 1912, and it's one of the last survivors of its kind. The National Trust maintains it in working order, which is genuinely impressive when you see the machinery in action.

The building itself is wonderfully straightforward: red brick, sturdy, with those characteristic Norfolk proportions. You can walk around the outside for free and get a sense of scale - it dominates the flat landscape completely. The setting is what matters most here. The surrounding marshland is quietly beautiful in that East Anglian way: reedy, open, full of bird activity. Bring binoculars if you're interested in wildlife.

This works best for two types of visitors: history enthusiasts keen on industrial heritage and serious birdwatchers. Casual families might spend twenty minutes looking and photographing, then want to move on. The Broads situation means the ground can be boggy in wet weather, so come prepared.

Horsey sits nicely alongside a caravan holiday in the area. Waxham Sands and Norfolk Broads Country Park are both within a couple of miles, making it an easy morning or afternoon excursion. Pop over from Clippesby Hall or Parkdean's California Cliffs site if you're further south near Great Yarmouth proper. The windpump itself opens seasonally - best to ring ahead from the National Trust website to confirm current access times and whether there's a small admission charge.
