Martham Broad Nature Reserve

The water here is properly alive with birds. Martham Broad, east of Great Yarmouth, is one of Norfolk's finest wetland reserves - a sprawling expanse of reed beds, open water, and marshy woodland that feels genuinely wild despite being readily accessible. You're looking at one of the largest remaining broadland nature reserves in the region, the kind of place where you can spend an afternoon watching marsh harriers hunt or spot bitterns booming in spring without seeing another soul.

Walking the trails here isn't about rushing. The paths wind through different habitats, and binoculars are essential - this is ornithology country, full stop. Birdwatchers will be in their element. The variety is staggering: reed warblers, great crested grebes, the occasional swallowtail butterfly if you're there in summer. Even casual visitors will find the landscape oddly absorbing, all those open vistas and water channels stretching to the horizon.

Allow a good two to three hours minimum if you're doing any serious exploring. The reserve operates on a honesty box system for a voluntary donation. Best visited outside peak summer months when the light is clearer and migratory birds are moving through. It's genuinely free, though a small contribution towards maintenance is requested.

If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Waxham Sands or Norfolk Broads Country Park are closest at just over two miles - Martham makes an excellent morning or afternoon break from beach time. It's a proper change of pace rather than just another fairground or seaside attraction. Families will find it peaceful rather than thrilling; older kids interested in wildlife will get far more from it than restless toddlers.
